Gas Safe Register

Required for all gas work, including boilers.

WaterSafe

UK register of approved plumbers for water fittings.

Trade bodies

Such as CIPHE, and SNIPEF in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Choose your area in the plumber finder: London, South East, South West, East of England, East Midlands, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, North West and North East England, plus Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The registers that matter

Differences across the nations

England and Wales follow the Building Regulations and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. Scotland has its own building standards and Scottish Water byelaws, and Northern Ireland has its own building and water fittings regulations. The registers above work across the UK, and a good plumber will know the rules where you live.

Water and sewerage companies

Your water company is responsible for the public supply and sewers, and often for shared drains outside your boundary. For low pressure across your street, a leak in the road or a public sewer problem, contact your water company before booking a plumber.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Gas Safe engineer or a plumber?
For anything involving gas, such as boilers, gas fires, hobs and gas pipework, you need a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for that appliance. For water-only work such as taps, toilets, leaks and drains, a plumber is fine.
Who do I call about low water pressure?
If neighbours are affected too, contact your water company first. If it's just your home, a plumber can check your stopcock, pipework and fittings.
