Ways to find a local plumber, compared
There's no single best route. It depends on how urgent the job is and how many quotes you want.
| Route | How it works | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quote marketplace | Post one request; several local plumbers contact you or send quotes. | Getting several quotes quickly for planned jobs. | Check each plumber yourself: being listed isn't the same as being qualified. |
| Review directory | Browse plumbers with profiles and customer reviews, then contact the ones you like. | Comparing track records in your area. | Read recent reviews and check how the site verifies them. |
| Official register | Search a register such as Gas Safe or WaterSafe (UK) or your state licence lookup (USA). | Confirming someone is qualified for the work. | Registers confirm qualifications, not price or availability. |
| Local firm direct | Call a plumber you've used before or one recommended by neighbours. | Emergencies and repeat work. | Still ask for a written quote and check registration or licence. |
UK or USA: what changes
In the UK, anyone working on gas appliances such as boilers must be on the Gas Safe Register. WaterSafe lists plumbers approved to work on water fittings. See plumbers in the UK.
In the USA, plumbers are usually licensed, mostly by the state and in some places by the city or county. Bigger jobs often need a permit and inspection. See plumbers in the USA.
