The main things that affect price
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Call-out or trip charge | Some plumbers charge to attend, sometimes deducted from the job. |
| Hourly vs fixed price | Hourly suits diagnosis and small jobs; fixed prices suit defined work like installs. |
| Time of day | Evenings, weekends and holidays are often charged at a higher rate. |
| Parts and materials | Fittings, valves, boilers and water heaters vary a lot in price and quality. |
| Access | Pipes under floors, behind tiles or in tight spaces take longer. |
| Location | Labour rates differ between cities and rural areas, and between regions and states. |
| Permits and certification | US permits and UK certification or notification can add to the cost. |
| Tax | UK quotes may or may not include VAT; in the USA sales tax on parts varies by state. |
Comparing quotes fairly
- Get at least three written quotes for planned work.
- Make sure each quote covers the same scope, parts and finish.
- Ask what happens if they find extra problems once work starts.
- Check guarantees on labour and warranties on parts.
- The cheapest quote isn't always the best value. Check registration, licence and insurance too.
Your rights
UK: under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill, and for a reasonable price if none was agreed. If you agree a contract in your home you usually have a 14-day cancellation period, though urgent repairs you asked for can be an exception.
USA: consumer protection rules vary by state. Your state attorney general's office publishes guidance on hiring contractors.
